No Dumb Questions

This response came from a question posed by a member of a support
group to which I belong in Happy Cow, CA. The question:
“what makes a person a cool ts”? (TS = Transsexual).

What follows was my response to the question:

A cool person is one is who supports you, even if they don't
understand. They won't discard you like last night's supper
scraps, or yesterday's paper simply because you're a person who
is TS. Cool people will share java with you, treat you as a
fellow human being and include you as part of their circle
without hesitation.

To be honest, I feel lost amongst most TS people. I realize
i'm older than most of the group (just edging up on the age of
50), but also learned to realize that life is not just about being
TS.

In my case, I'm still practicing physiotherapy, being an active
participant in a church family and just continuing to earn my
place and keep. I'm slowly getting back into doing things I used
to do before I moved to California (from somewhere else) and
developing a new group of friends (mostly straight women) and a life.

What I do have in common with my TS brothers and sisters is the
journey that we share and many of its experiences. In the same
vein, it is that sharing that helps ease the load for another,
or even ourselves.

Transitioning is something you definitely shouldn't do by
yourself..as you've discovered by now, the folk surrounding you
are transitioning as well. They're adapting to the new you as
you learn to deal with them in your changing role. Be gentle
with them, and you'll find that they'll usually be kind to you
in return.

Unfortunately, all that takes time and it gets harder as you
get older. All we can be is fully human and fully alive. The
journey is the destination..and we're on it.
